The product
Its own reader, and AI if you want it
Murgese reads invoices, receipts and bank statements with its own reader, on your computer, and sends nothing anywhere. AI is optional. A firm that wants it can connect an account of its own to read documents, analyse figures and draft wording, and Murgese checks every figure that comes back.
Built in
Murgese reads PDFs itself, on your computer
Read PDFs, on Bills and on Invoices, and the bank statement importer use Murgese's own reader. It reads the file's own text where there is any and reads the page as a picture where there is not, so a scan or a photograph comes through too. It runs on the computer Murgese is installed on, and nothing is sent anywhere.
It reads an invoice by where things sit on the page as well as by its words: the supplier who issued it rather than the Bill to or Shipping address block, the total that equals the net plus the VAT, the sterling figures on an invoice charged in another currency. Every reading is a suggestion on its card, checked before anything is created.
It is the default, and it stays the default. None of this needs AI.
Try it
Three invoices, read by Murgese's own reader
Pick an invoice, then a reading, to see where on the page it came from and why.
On a marketplace invoice in two currencies, Murgese's own reader takes the marketplace operator as the supplier rather than the store or the shipping address, reads the net and the VAT from the sterling column of the VAT summary, and takes the total that equals the two together. On a QuickBooks invoice it takes the supplier from the letterhead and not from the Bill to block. On a supplier abroad it reads 1.200,00 as twelve hundred and enters the reverse charge on services from abroad.
Optional
AI, on the firm's own account
Under Practice settings, Reading and analysing with AI, a firm can connect an AI account it already has: Claude (Anthropic), OpenAI (GPT), or Azure OpenAI (Microsoft) for a firm whose IT keeps AI inside its own Azure subscription. Each has its own tab with the steps to set it up.
The provider bills the firm for what it reads or drafts. Nothing goes through Murgese Ltd. Each key is tried as it is saved, stored sealed, and only its last four characters are ever shown again.
Two separate switches, both off until somebody turns them on:
- ReadingAn AI account reads invoices, receipts and bank statements instead of Murgese's own reader. It reads any layout. Each document is then sent to that provider, every screen that reads one says so, and a document the provider cannot be reached for is read on the computer instead, with the card saying so.
- Analysis and draftingAnalyse with AI on reports, management accounts, the dashboard and the VAT return, and Draft with AI for commentary, policies and notes and the directors' or trustees' report. Nothing is sent until somebody presses the button.
Confirmed before anything is sent
Switching a provider on asks somebody who can change settings to confirm that the firm has the provider's data processing terms, has told its clients, and has considered its professional body's guidance. Wording to start from comes with it, for the engagement letter and the privacy notice.
Tried on an invented invoice first
Try it on a sample invoice reads an invoice that comes with Murgese, not a client's, and shows each field as printed beside what the provider read. It proves the key, the model and the connection, through the office's own proxy, before any client's document is sent.
Any model the account offers
Choose from the models offered first, or name any other the provider offers the firm's account. Murgese can ask the provider for its list, and a model the provider withdraws is said as such rather than failing quietly.
What is sent
Exactly what goes, and where
Three tasks, three providers. These are the requests Murgese made, recorded whole, with the key described rather than shown.
Nothing is sent unless the firm has turned AI on. Reading an invoice sends the document itself and the company's own name, so the model knows which party is the firm. Analyse with AI sends the figures on the screen, named and in pounds, with the company's name and the period, and nothing else from the books. Drafting policies and notes sends the company's name, year end and framework, the figures in the accounts and the policies and notes as they stand. Each request goes from the computer straight to the provider, under the firm's own account.
Every figure checked
It is never the author of a figure
Every amount in an answer is looked for in the figures that were sent, or as the difference or sum of two on one line, allowing only for the rounding it is written with. Every percentage has to be one figure as a share of another, or the change between them. Anything else is marked against the sentence that holds it.
In the analysis below, a mark-up of £14,250 was written that is not in the figures sent and cannot be worked out from them, so Murgese prints it in red under its sentence. A reference to a paragraph of a standard is flagged to be checked against the standard, and a point that quotes no figure is marked General and listed last.
What else is checked, whoever reads
- An invoiceStill has to add up, have a reference and a positive total, and no reader chooses a nominal account.
- A bank statementStill has to reconcile to its own summary box, opening and closing balances and running balance.
- An AI readingFaces more: every figure it returns has to be printed on the document, and every date on a statement has to fall inside the period it covers.
- ReferencesA paragraph of a standard or a section of an Act in an answer is flagged to be checked, never taken on trust.
Drafting
Offered for you to tick, never applied
Draft with AI writes management accounts commentary, the accounting policies and notes the figures call for, and the sections of the directors' or trustees' report that are a judgement about the year. Names, the small companies statement, responsibilities and approval are never sent to be redrafted.
Each proposal sits beside the wording it would replace, with its own tick. One holding an amount that is not in the figures starts unticked, and a fact the books cannot give is left in square brackets for the preparer. Nothing changes until somebody presses Use the ticked wording, and what was accepted, and which model drafted it, goes on the audit trail.
Wording accepted into a set of year-end accounts stays listed, with who drafted and who accepted it, until somebody marks each piece reviewed. The accounts cannot be approved while any is left.
What it costs
The provider's price, and a table of what it took
The firm pays its provider directly, at the provider's own prices. Murgese shows, month by month, every use of the AI features: how many questions, how many failed, the average time, the tokens and an estimate at the provider's list price, and for invoices how often a person corrected a figure, date or reference the AI had read. The provider's own usage page is the bill.
Azure prices depend on the firm's own agreement, so for Azure the table shows the tokens without an estimate.
What it does not do
- It is not on by defaultMurgese's own reader reads everything until a firm chooses otherwise, and analysis and drafting are off until somebody turns them on.
- It does not go through usEach request goes from the computer to the firm's own account with the provider. None of it passes through Murgese Ltd.
- It sends nothing it is not asked toA document is sent when it is read, with nothing else from the books. Figures and wording are sent when somebody presses Analyse or Draft: the lines on that screen, not the books behind them.
- It never changes the books by itselfReadings are suggestions on a card, analysis is shown and not saved, and drafted wording waits for a tick.
- It never cites the standardIt is told not to, and a reference that comes back anyway is flagged to be checked against the standard or the Act.
See it on your own figures
Request the software and run Read PDFs on a few of your own invoices with Murgese's own reader. If the firm wants AI, connect its account and try the sample invoice first.
