A few of the things Murgese does, working on this page: its own reader on three invoices, an invoice laid out your way, and four calculators that do the arithmetic the product does. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

Each of these has its own page under Free tools, with what the software does with it. The Construction Act payment dates are there too.

01 Read PDFs

Three invoices, read by Murgese's own reader

On your computer, with no AI and nothing sent. Pick a reading to see where on the page it came from.

On a marketplace invoice in two currencies, Murgese's own reader takes the marketplace operator as the supplier rather than the store or the shipping address, and uses the sterling figures. On a QuickBooks invoice it takes the supplier from the letterhead, not the Bill to block. On a supplier abroad it reads 1.200,00 as twelve hundred and enters the reverse charge on services from abroad.

AI is optional, and off until a firm turns it on with its own account. What it does, and exactly what it sends.

02 Invoices your own way

Hide the quantity, and see when the law puts it back

The logo where you want it, your own column headings and a second colour. On a VAT invoice the quantity and unit price still print wherever a line is for more than one of something or carries a discount.

Under Settings, Sales documents, a company can put its logo left, centre or right, name its own columns, choose a second colour (darkened where needed so it can always be read) and hide the quantity and the unit price. On a VAT invoice or credit note they still print wherever a line is for more than one of something or carries a discount, because a full VAT invoice must show them there.

03 Corporation tax

Marginal relief, worked the way the return is

The profit in whole pounds, the limits shared with associated companies and cut for a short period, dividends counted towards the band, and the tax to the penny.

For a twelve-month period with no associated companies, the small profits rate of 19% applies up to £50,000, the main rate of 25% from £250,000, and between the two the main rate less marginal relief at 3/200 of the difference between the upper limit and the profits.

04 CIS

What to withhold from a subcontractor's invoice

Labour, materials and the third category, outside the scheme, each treated as the scheme treats it, and what the monthly return is told.

The deduction is the subcontractor's rate (nil for gross payment status, 20% if registered, 30% if unmatched) on the labour, net of VAT and materials. An amount outside the scheme is neither deducted from nor reported on the CIS300.

05 Capital allowances

Which first year allowance, and why not

Full expensing, the 50% and the new 40% allowance, and the two 100% allowances, with the reason in words wherever one is withheld.

For a company, new and unused main rate plant gets full expensing and special rate plant the 50% allowance, from 1 April 2023. From 1 January 2026 there is a 40% allowance on new main rate plant, for companies and unincorporated businesses, which also covers plant bought to lease out unless it is leased for use overseas. A car never qualifies.

06 Leases under FRS 102 as amended

On the balance sheet, or exempt?

The three exemptions a lessee can claim, and the checks Murgese makes when one is.

Under FRS 102 as amended, for periods beginning on or after 1 January 2026, most leases go on the balance sheet. A short-term lease (twelve months or less, with no purchase option) and a lease of a low-value asset can be kept off it, and an operating lease already running at the date of initial application that ends within twelve months of it can be treated as short-term. FRS 105 was not changed.
